Medicare, without the mailbox avalanche
Turning 65 shouldn’t feel like a part-time job. We help retirees across Volusia County understand how Medicare fits the bigger picture — the parts, the timing, the tradeoffs, and how it interacts with your income plan and your taxes.
The mail teaches products, not the framework
Glossy brochures start arriving around your 64th birthday. Most promote a product; very little explains the framework underneath.
- Enrollment timing ties to your birthday, your Social Security date, and any employer coverage
- Late enrollment in Part B or D can trigger lifetime penalties
- Higher-income retirees pay IRMAA — based on your tax return from two years prior
- Advantage vs Original + Medigap isn’t a one-time choice; it has long-term consequences
- Your prescriptions, your network, and Medicare itself can change every year
Medicare, in five pieces
Hospital
Inpatient hospital coverage — automatic for most people at 65.
Outpatient & doctors
Doctor visits and outpatient care. Requires enrollment and carries a premium.
Medicare Advantage
An all-in-one alternative offered by private carriers.
Prescriptions
Drug coverage — required unless you have other qualifying coverage.
Supplement
Private coverage that pairs with Original Medicare to fill the gaps.
Advantage vs Original + Medigap
There’s no universal right answer. Your health, your doctors, and your travel patterns all factor in.
- Typically lower premiums
- Often bundles drug coverage and extras
- Network restrictions — in-network doctors and referrals
- Coverage can change year to year
- Typically higher premiums
- Broad provider choice — most doctors nationwide
- Predictable costs with a supplement
- Add a separate Part D drug plan
Educational and planning-focused
Get the timing right
Initial and Special Enrollment Periods — and what happens if you delay Part B because you’re still working with employer coverage.
Plan around IRMAA
Roth conversions, capital gains, and large IRA withdrawals can quietly push you into a higher Medicare premium tier. We model it before you act.
Coordinate with your income plan
Healthcare is one of the largest line items in retirement. We budget realistically and stress-test rising costs.
Plan for long-term care
Medicare doesn’t pay for most LTC. Steven holds the CLTC® designation and can walk you through your options.

Medicare questions
Do you sell Medicare plans?
No. Steven holds a health insurance license but doesn’t sell Advantage, Medigap, or Part D plans and isn’t appointed with any Medicare carrier. His role is retirement planning — making sure your Medicare timing and coverage are coordinated with your income, tax, and investment strategy. When it’s time to enroll, we connect you with a licensed Medicare specialist.
What is IRMAA and should I worry about it?
IRMAA is the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount — an added Medicare premium for higher-income retirees, based on your tax return from two years prior. If you’re planning Roth conversions, large IRA withdrawals, or selling a property, we help you understand the premium impact before you act.
Advantage or Original Medicare with Medigap?
No universal right answer. Advantage plans typically have lower premiums and network restrictions; Original + Medigap typically has higher premiums and broader provider choice. Your health, your doctors, and your travel all factor in.
I’m still working at 65. Do I need to enroll?
It depends on the size of your employer and the type of coverage you have. We help you avoid late-enrollment penalties while making the right call for your situation.
Does Medicare cover long-term care?
Mostly no. Medicare covers short-term skilled nursing or rehab after a qualifying hospital stay, not extended custodial care. Long-term care is a separate conversation — one Steven is credentialed to walk you through.

Steven does not hold appointments with or receive compensation directly from Medicare carriers. When plan-specific enrollment is needed, clients are referred to licensed Medicare insurance specialists; New Smyrna Beach Retirement Solutions may receive compensation in connection with these referrals, which represents a conflict of interest. You are not required to use any referred specialist and may work with a Medicare agent of your choosing.
